News Summary:

On May 1, 2026, Viaplay Group extended its exclusive rights to the men's UEFA Champions League in Denmark, and to the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Conference League in Norway and Finland, for four years from Fall 2027 through 2031. Earlier on the same day, RTÉ secured a new four-year deal, running from 2027 to 2031, to broadcast the UEFA Champions League, ensuring free-to-air coverage of Europe’s top club competition in Ireland, including first-pick live matches on Wednesday nights and the final. This followed UEFA's announcement on April 30, 2026, detailing broadcast deals and allocating rights for 2027-2031 across member states. For Irish audiences, Dublin-based Premier Sports secured "first pick" access for Tuesday night Champions League games, a highlights package, and the final, with Virgin Media admitting the rights race was "no longer sustainable." Also on April 30, Arsenal considered lodging an official complaint with UEFA against Atletico Madrid following their controversial Champions League semi-final first leg at the Metropolitano Stadium. Arsenal is also expected to be among the biggest beneficiaries of a significant increase in the money UEFA distributes among Champions League participants, a development confirmed after the Atletico Madrid match.
