Rising diesel prices, exacerbated by global tensions including the Iran conflict, are accelerating a continent-wide shift towards solar-powered telecom towers in Africa, where diesel remains the primary energy source for approximately 500,000 towers. Earlier, on May 1, MTN Nigeria shareholders approved a ₦152.06 billion restructuring of the company’s digital financial services business, allowing the telecom operator to relinquish majority control of its fintech subsidiaries, MoMo PSB and YDFS. As part of this transaction, MTN Group plans to invest approximately ₦152.06 billion to acquire a 60% stake in these entities, consequently reducing MTN Nigeria’s ownership.
