Valve's April 2026 Steam Hardware & Software Survey, released on May 2, indicated that Linux maintained a positive trend in its operating system market share at 4.52%, despite a slight decrease from the previous month's all-time high. Windows remained dominant with 93.47%, and macOS held 2.01%. On the same day, reports noted that the early release of Valve's Steam Controller surprised many, amidst reported delays for its Steam Machine, which has led some gamers to construct their own versions of the compact gaming device. Previously, on May 1, discussions highlighted the impact of Valve's SteamOS operating system in challenging Windows' long-standing dominance in PC gaming, acknowledging Microsoft's continued majority share based on Valve's statistics. Also on May 1, accessory maker Mechanism announced its Basegrip for the new Steam Controller, allowing users to mount the device to a smartphone. This accessory is set to become available on May 4, coinciding with the Steam Controller's retail launch.
