News Summary:

Papua New Guinea’s Abigail Tere-Apisah steps into the role of Pacific Oceania Billie Jean King Cup captain on June 16, marking a significant leadership milestone. On June 9, three-time Grand Slam champion Ash Barty visited Sherwood State School in Brisbane to relaunch the Ash Barty Schools Challenge for 2026. This program, which attracted entries from schools across every state and territory in its inaugural year, returns with a refreshed format designed for easier participation. On May 29, incoming chief executive Andrew Abdo, previously the NRL’s CEO for six years, did not commit to also becoming the Australian Open tournament director, a position held by his predecessor Craig Tiley. This followed Abdo's May 25 announcement of his resignation from the NRL to lead Tennis Australia, replacing Craig Tiley, who declared in February his plan to step down this year to become head of the US Tennis Association. Abdo will continue his rugby league duties until July 15, with an expectation to finalize a new broadcast deal for the competition, and is set to officially start with Tennis Australia on August 3.
