News Summary:

On May 1, 2026, Taiwan activated backup communications for its northernmost territory, Dongyin, after an undersea cable linking the island broke. This followed Chunghwa Telecom's report on April 30 that the No. 3 submarine cable connecting Matsu Island's Beigan and Dongyin Townships was severed, with a core fiber break located about 2.64 km off Dongyin, causing a complete outage. Authorities attributed the damage to poor weather conditions that apparently shifted a ship's wreckage onto the cable. Earlier, on April 27, Chunghwa Telecom announced it would hold its 2026 Annual Shareholders' Meeting on May 29, 2026, in New Taipei City. Also on April 27, its subsidiary, Honghwa International Corporation, agreed to acquire a five-year right-of-use asset from the parent company for office premises at No. 16 Minzu Road in Banqiao District, New Taipei City.
