Thales Alenia Space, a privately owned company headquartered in France, was founded in 2007 and employs approximately 6,980 individuals. The company specializes in aviation and aerospace component manufacturing, functioning as a joint venture between the French technology corporation Thales Group and Italian defense conglomerate Leonardo. It delivers cost-effective solutions for telecommunications, navigation, Earth observation, environmental management, exploration, science, and orbital infrastructures.
On April 30, 2026, France and Poland announced plans to develop a joint military satellite system, prioritizing secure encrypted communication, with participation from Thales Alenia Space, Airbus Defence and Space, and Poland's RADMOR. Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and French Minister of the Armed Forces Catherine Vautrin publicized the agreement. This announcement followed an industrial cooperation agreement signed by Thales Alenia Space, through a joint venture with Leonardo, with Airbus Defence and Space and RADMOR on April 29, 2026, to develop a geostationary defense telecommunications satellite for the Polish Ministry of Defence. Earlier on April 29, a manufacturing defect at Thales Alenia Space facilities in Italy, attributed to forging and surface treatment work, became an official justification for NASA's decision to suspend development of its lunar Gateway, as it caused corrosion in structural modules for both Gateway and Axiom Space’s commercial station. The issue of corrosion in modules for NASA’s Gateway lunar space station had gained widespread attention following NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman's April 22 congressional testimony, where he stated that "the only two habitable volumes that were delivered were both corroded," leading to acknowledgement and clarification from Thales Alenia Space as the manufacturer. This manufacturing problem, impacting modules for both the lunar Gateway and Axiom Space’s commercial space station, first gained public prominence after Isaacman's comments at an April 22 House Science Committee hearing discussing effectively canceling Gateway.
