On May 2, 2026, NASA astronaut Anil Menon prepared for his inaugural journey to orbit, having spent years shaping spaceflight, including several as a NASA flight surgeon and as SpaceX’s medical director, where he authored research on the effects of space on the human body. Earlier the same day, NASA initiated testing of a futuristic plasma thruster designed for Mars missions, aiming to shorten the journey across the over 100 million miles to the red planet, a trip that currently can take many months. This followed NASA satellite imagery revealing that Mexico City is sinking by nearly 25 centimeters (10 inches) annually, positioning it among the world's most rapidly subsiding major cities. The urban center, home to approximately 22 million people, was originally constructed on an ancient lake bed.
