On March 22, 2026, a joint research and development team, including MediaTek and Microsoft Research, developed a next-generation active optical cable (AOC) based on miniaturized Micro LED light sources, aiming to achieve a 50% power reduction. Previously, on March 20, MediaTek was observed to be in a stable position as chipmakers focused on establishing next-generation silicon photonics standards, a critical area for optical communication in cloud AI underscored at Nvidia GTC 2026 and the Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC). This followed reports from March 19 indicating that MediaTek, along with GUC and Alchip, is poised to benefit as major cloud service providers (CSPs) accelerate their push into application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) in the second half of 2026. This move by CSPs to deploy in-house chip-based servers is expected to intensify competition in the AI chip market and could challenge NVIDIA’s existing market share, despite NVIDIA's announced $1 trillion revenue target for its Blackwell and Rubin chips at GTC 2026.
