Salzgitter AG's subsidiary Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH signed its first large-scale external green hydrogen procurement agreement with German energy company EWE AG on June 26, 2026, marking a key milestone in Germany's hydrogen economy and the decarbonization of the steel industry. Previously on June 24, EWE AG reduced its Java licensing costs by 60% by migrating from Oracle to Azul Core, standardizing the infrastructure for over 100 applications and tens of thousands of desktops, as Java is deeply embedded across its systems. This followed the June 23 approval granted to EWE and Gastransport Nord by Lower Saxony’s state office for mining, energy, and geology (LBEG) for a 23.5-kilometer hydrogen pipeline. The pipeline will connect a planned 320MW green hydrogen project in Emden, Germany, to the national hydrogen backbone, forming part of EWE’s Clean Hydrogen Coastline initiative focused on hydrogen production, storage, and transportation in the region.
