Dhiraagu, a privately owned company headquartered in Maldives, was founded in 1988 and employs approximately 520 people. Functioning as a tier 1 media tech buyer, the company provides telecommunications and digital services, offering a comprehensive range of mobile, internet, data, fixed line, and TV services.
On September 7, 2026, the government began work to acquire a controlling 51 percent stake in Dhiraagu and full ownership of the Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), an initiative announced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu following a Cabinet decision. This development followed former President Mohamed Nasheed's opposition, on September 6, 2026, to increasing the government’s shareholding, arguing that Dhiraagu's independent operation stems from its privatized structure. President Muizzu had previously stated Dhiraagu is a strategic asset and majority government control would serve the public interest. Also on September 6, Dhiraagu partnered with SEAD to support ocean literacy among young people, aiming to develop their understanding and skills to protect the marine environment. Earlier, on August 30, 2026, the Dhiraagu Malé Open 2026 celebrated its open water swimming champions, gathering over 420 swimmers in the largest event of its kind in Malé. Dhiraagu also concluded the 20th edition of its annual futsal tournament, DESCUP 2026, on August 24, 2026, which featured over 300 employees across 19 teams and three leagues.
