On July 9, 2026, the Kenyan government sought shareholder approval to gain final say over Safaricom's future expansion beyond its current operations in Kenya and Ethiopia, proposing a requirement for government consent before the company enters any new international market. Earlier the same day, Vodafone, referencing experience from subsidiaries including Vodacom across Europe and Africa, released a report titled "Connectivity as a Lifeline: Enabling Climate Resilience in a Disrupted World," which emphasizes connectivity as critical infrastructure for climate resilience, supporting functions from early warning systems to emergency response. Previously, on July 8, Vodafone Kenya, a subsidiary of South Africa's Vodacom Group, gained the power to nominate Safaricom's next chief executive under proposed governance changes, which concurrently stipulate that Safaricom's board must ensure a "predominantly Kenyan character" in its senior management.
