Vodacom is a publicly owned mobile communications company headquartered in South Africa. A subsidiary of Vodafone Africa Consumer, Vodacom was founded in 1994 and operates with an estimated 16,370 employees. The company reported $9.3B in revenue as of 2025. It provides a range of voice, messaging, data, and converged services through its operations and subsidiaries, which include Vodacom Congo, Vodacom Lesotho, Vodacom Mocambique, Vodacom South Africa, Vodacom Tanzania, and Vodafone Egypt.
Vodacom is fighting to retain control of Safaricom after a Kenyan High Court on September 17 nullified its acquisition of an additional 20% stake. The court ruled the deal concealed critical information from the public, Cabinet, and Parliament, leading a three-judge bench to declare the partial divestiture void. This ruling means Vodacom, Vodafone’s African arm, now faces the prospect of an enforced €1.4 billion deal unwind, just months after celebrating taking control of Safaricom. The situation presents complex balance-sheet unravelling and regulatory exposure for executives. Kenya’s government, on the same day, announced it would appeal the court ruling, a move analysts fear could endanger the country’s flagship infrastructure plans, including President William Ruto's earlier creation of a $39 billion National Infrastructure Fund. Vodacom had previously stated on September 16 its intention to appeal the Kenyan court ruling that ordered the cancellation of its earlier acquisition of an additional 15% stake in Safaricom, citing the court's finding that the government's sale did not adequately involve the public and was marked by the concealment of material information.
