United States Department of Defense, a state-owned entity headquartered in the US, was founded in 1949 and employs approximately 67,850 individuals. The department's primary function is to provide military forces to protect the U.S. and U.S. interests abroad.
On March 22, 2026, the United States' federal government debt surpassed $39 trillion, reaching 124% of the nation's GDP, amidst its ongoing conflict with Iran. Earlier the same day, a BBC analysis reported that Iranian airstrikes on U.S. military bases in the Middle East caused $800 million in damage during the first two weeks of the war. Concurrently, the U.S. government labeled artificial intelligence firm Anthropic an "unacceptable risk" to military supply chains, defending its decision to limit engagement with the company in the face of a legal challenge. Previously, on March 21, the U.S. Department of Defense officially designated Palantir Technologies’ ‘Maven AI’ system as a ‘Program of Record,’ integrating the AI system into its military operations, notably for use in Iran strikes. This followed an additional contract by the U.S. government for $6.8 billion in weapons for Ukraine under the USAI program, which had already supplied $11.1 billion worth of weapons as of October 2025 from a $33 billion congressional allocation.
