The company originated as an animation studio by brothers Walt Disney and Roy Oliver Disney, initially named Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio, and later operated as Walt Disney Studio and Walt Disney Productions before adopting its current name in 1986. In 1928, it made its mark in the animation industry with the short film Steamboat Willie, which utilized synchronized sound to become the first post-produced sound cartoon and popularized Mickey Mouse as its mascot and corporate icon.
