The Recording Academy, also known as NARAS, is a privately owned organization headquartered in the US. Founded in 1957 with approximately 1,520 employees, the company functions as a tier 1 media tech buyer. The organization operates as a professional body, comprised of musicians, producers, engineers, and other music industry professionals dedicated to promoting and recognizing excellence in the recording arts. It is known for its Grammy Awards, which recognize achievements in the music industry concerning songs and music globally.
On July 9, The Recording Academy extended invitations to over 4000 new members, including individuals like Sombr Ejae Lola Young, as part of its annual expansion efforts. This move aims to rejuvenate the organization and broaden its global reach, with many of the new invitees becoming eligible to participate in the upcoming Grammy Awards process, reinforcing the Academy's commitment to a diverse and qualified membership across various genres, backgrounds, and disciplines. Earlier on July 9, a coalition of US music organizations urged the U.S. Trade Representative to oppose an EU proposal threatening to cut off over $300 million in annual European recording payments to American artists, a situation stemming from ongoing complications regarding US radio stations not paying royalties to recording owners. Previously, on July 7, the Grammys announced significant rule changes and five new categories for its upcoming 69th edition, scheduled for next February, including the Best Asian Pop Music Performance award designed to recognize excellence in genres such as K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop. In late June, Recording Academy President Harvey Mason Jr. co-authored an op-ed for Variety with YouTube’s Lyor Cohen, advocating for the NO FAKES act as a starting point for creator rights.
