Sony Music Entertainment recently announced its plans to shut down Kings Road Merch, a Minneapolis-based warehouse processing merchandise for punk and indie artists, with the company denying claims of union-busting from the facility's recently unionized staff. This follows a lawsuit filed on July 9 in the Southern District of New York by Atlanta-based So-So Def and its founder Jermaine Dupri, alleging over $18 million in unpaid royalties from Sony. The complaint states that Dupri's recordings and production work for artists including Mariah Carey, Usher, Ludacris, TLC, and Janet Jackson generated more than $200 million in gross revenue. Earlier, a report published on July 6 highlighted Sony Music's acquisition of the Recognition Music Group catalogue, noting it as one of three market-restructuring deals announced within a 50-day period. Previously, on June 30, Sony Music and Beyoncé’s Parkwood Entertainment successfully defended against an "Alien Superstar" sample suit, with the court determining the plaintiff lacked standing to prosecute the case.
