StarSat, also known as StarTimes Media, is privately owned and headquartered in South Africa. Founded in 1988, the company employs approximately 180 individuals and reported $36.7M in revenue as of 2024. Parented by StarTimes, it operates as a tier 1 media tech buyer. Functioning as a provider of media and TV services, StarSat is the commercial subscription pay-television and satellite broadcast network operated by On Digital Media (ODM) in strategic partnership with Chinese media enterprise StarTimes. Originally launched in May 2010 under the TopTV brand name as South Africa's first major satellite competitor to DStv, the platform was rebranded as StarSat in October 2013 following StarTimes' entry into ODM. The platform provides direct-to-home (DTH) digital satellite television, local drama channels, news networks, sports broadcasting, international film channels, and Chinese cultural programming across South Africa and southern Africa.
OnDigital Media, the license holder for StarSat, ceased operations following its recent liquidation. This occurred months after the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) conducted a raid on StarSat's Midrand headquarters in October 2024, disconnecting its broadcast signals due to a lapsed broadcasting license. StarSat, a satellite pay-TV broadcaster, subsequently ended operations.
