Showmax is a privately owned company headquartered in South Africa. It is a subsidiary of Multichoice and NBCUniversal and operates as a tier 2 media tech buyer. Founded in 2015, Showmax employs approximately 130 individuals and reported $6.5M in revenue as of 2023. The company specializes in media and TV services, functioning as an internet TV service in South Africa.
On March 20, 2026, TechCabal senior reporter Timi Jaiyeola stated that low disposable income across Africa, rather than a lack of subscribers, is the biggest challenge hindering streaming platforms like Showmax in the continent. Earlier, on March 19, MultiChoice informed customers that its Showmax streaming service will cease operations on April 30, 2026, with March 31, 2026, marking the final day for subscription renewals or voucher redemptions. New subscriptions will not be accepted from April 1. Following the shutdown, Showmax Originals will transition to a dedicated section within the DStv Stream app. This decision follows the recent acquisition of MultiChoice by Canal+, which had announced the closure earlier in March.
