Osaka Gas announced a deal on September 18, 2026, to acquire a 5% interest in the Browse gas project offshore Western Australia from BP. This strategic acquisition, executed through Osaka Gas Browse, an investee of its wholly owned subsidiary Osaka Gas Australia, will add an expected 550,000 tonnes per year of LNG to the company's procurement portfolio. The move reinforces Japan's interest in the large undeveloped gas resource off Western Australia’s north-west, providing new Australian supplies amid doubts about future exports from the Middle East. BP, now led by Woodside Energy’s former chief executive Meg O’Neill, previously held a 39.33% stake in the project. Previously, on September 9, 2026, the company completed its first ship-to-ship (STS) LNG bunkering operation in Osaka Bay, supplying an unspecified quantity of LNG to a pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) calling at the Port of Kobe. The operation, described as the first-ever STS LNG bunkering in Osaka Bay, utilized the LNG bunkering vessel Seto Azure, which is owned by its affiliated company Osaka Bay LNG Shipping.
