Functioning as a technology joint venture of major Hollywood studios including Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal Pictures, Walt Disney Pictures, and Warner Bros., the organization specializes in the research, experimentation, and development of new technologies, specifications, and tools for the film and television industry. MovieLabs Industry Forum Chair Leon Silverman stated on September 14, 2026, during an IBC panel, that the organization's "Roadmap is becoming the road," referencing the "2030 Vision" introduced at IBC 2019, which guided Ontology for Media Creation (OMC) development. Previously, on September 4, the FRAMES project revealed its collaboration with the MovieLabs ontology group to prove an end-to-end intelligent media production framework by standardizing archival asset management, metadata, and enforcing Zero Trust security, noting Yamdu's existing involvement in the MovieLabs Industry Forum and ongoing OMC alignment work. On July 30, Sohonet joined the Leadership Council of the MovieLabs Industry Forum, aiming to help guide its direction, strategy, and governance alongside other industry players. This followed MovieLabs' announcement on July 8 of the MovieLabs Creative Vocabulary, designed to formalize the shared language used by film and television creators regarding production techniques. Hours earlier on July 8, MovieLabs also detailed its efforts to build foundations for trusted and reliable AI in media creation workflows, supporting tools and technologies that advance professional media creation in a secure, efficient, and interoperable way.
