King Charles III, on September 18, urged leading technology industry figures, including representatives from Google DeepMind, to establish urgent ethical safeguards for artificial intelligence. The monarch had hosted leaders from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and Nvidia at Dumfries House in Ayrshire on September 17, discussing AI's growing existential risks and the need to ensure it remains controlled and beneficial to society. Earlier on September 18, Google and Google DeepMind researchers launched the DeepMind Institute, a new platform designed to broaden research and debate on artificial general intelligence (AGI) and its societal implications. Google DeepMind co-founder Shane Legg serves as managing editor, with Google executive James Manyika and Google DeepMind chair Demis Hassabis also listed as directors.
