World Mountain and Trail Running Championships

World Mountain and Trail Running Championships, also known as WMTRC, is a non-profit organization headquartered in Austria. Established in 2022, it operates with approximately 20 employees and reported $3.7M in revenue as of 2023. The entity is also considered a tier 3 media tech buyer. The organization is structured as a biennial partnership between the World Mountain Running Association (WMRA), the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU), and the International Trail Running Association (ITRA), sanctioned by World Athletics, to host global off-road athletic championships. These championships unite various competitions into a framework for elite athletes across five distinct disciplines: the Vertical Uphill, Classic Up and Down, Junior Classic, and the Short (40km) and Long (80km) trail races. Each edition is held in mountain massifs, such as Canfranc-Pirineos (2025) and Cape Town (2027), utilizing high-altitude terrain to award official world titles, attract international media attention, and secure commercial sponsorship. The championships also engage with search, social, and retail media.
