Universal Music Group, also known as UMG, is publicly owned, headquartered in the Netherlands. Founded in 1934, the company employs approximately 8500 individuals. Functioning as a Dutch-American multinational music label, it operates as the largest music label globally.
On July 9, 2026, Aubrey Drake Graham’s ongoing legal dispute with UMG Recordings Inc. reached the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, focusing on a diss track that raised questions about intellectual property rights and artistic expression. Concurrently, Bravado and Universal Music Group (UMG) launched an upcycling initiative for unsold tour T-shirts, addressing merchandise excess as artists increasingly rely on merch revenue amid declining music sales. Previously, on July 8, UMG-owned GTS formed an alliance with Telemundo for "Operación Triunfo Estados Unidos," the US edition of the Spanish music competition, gaining preferential rights to sign artists from the program and develop their concert tours. This followed Universal Music Group’s partnership with White Rocks, announced on July 7, to develop UMusic Hotel & Private Residences Austin, a 71-acre site near the Texas Hill Country. The project will include 150 hotel rooms, 600 private residences, and a new amphitheater.
