Universal Music Group, also known as UMG, a publicly owned company headquartered in the Netherlands, was founded in 1934. The company has approximately 8500 employees and reported $14.1B in revenue as of 2025. It functions as a Dutch–American multinational music label.
On September 17, 2026, UMG Recordings sued DistroKid in the district of Delaware for alleged copyright infringement, asserting that DistroKid "is flooding platforms with AI-generated ‘slop’ that siphons revenue and listeners from legitimate artists." This lawsuit, filed by UMG and its Capitol Records label, marks the 144th copyright action against AI companies. Separately on the same day, Universal Music Group and Warner Records informed a New York federal court that the American Federation of Musicians conceded its case when it accepted that no union agreement covers AI, filing reply briefs on September 11 in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. Previously, on September 16, Universal Music Group and ElevenLabs announced a multi-year strategic licensing agreement to launch a new AI-powered music platform built on UMG’s catalog, which aims to monetize AI under tighter permissions for licensed remix and mashup uses.
