Southern California Edison, also known as SCE, is a privately owned company headquartered in the US and the largest subsidiary of Edison International. Founded in 1886, the company employs approximately 12,530 individuals. It functions as the primary electric utility for much of Southern California, providing electricity to 15 million people across a service territory of approximately 50,000 square miles. SCE owns all of its electrical transmission facilities and equipment. Following the deregulation of California's electricity market in the late 1990s, the company sold many of its power plants, though it retained its hydroelectric plants, totaling about 1,200 MW, and held a 75% share of the 2,150-MW San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station before its decommissioning in 2013. In addition to its electric business, SCE operates the sole gas utility and water utility on Santa Catalina Island, under the names Catalina Island Gas Company and Catalina Island Water Company respectively.
