News Summary:

On March 20, 2026, researchers at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and collaborating institutions developed a generative machine learning model capable of reconstructing the 3D structure of molecules. This AI model predicts a molecule's pre-blast geometry by analyzing how its ions scatter after being hit with powerful X-rays, a technique called Coulomb explosion imaging. Scientists specifically trained a neural network to use ion momentum to work backward and determine the original structure. Earlier, on March 18, SLAC hosted nearly 300 middle and high school students from the San Francisco Bay Area for the Regional Science Bowl. This competition, part of the Department of Energy National Science Bowl, tested students' knowledge in biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy, and mathematics, with the objective of encouraging careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
