RT, a state-owned entity headquartered in Russia, was founded in 2005. The company operates international news television networks, including pay television and free-to-air channels, directed at audiences outside of Russia. It also provides Internet content in multiple languages, including Russian, English, Spanish, French, German, Arabic, Portuguese, and Serbian.
RT signed a cooperation agreement with Tafouk TV on July 10, 2026, becoming the first international partner of the unified television channel of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). This agreement encompasses content sharing and joint coverage of Russia and the three AES members. Previously, on July 2, the EU's top court ruled that private individuals could face criminal prosecution and potential prison sentences for posting RT videos on public websites, a decision that widens the bloc's crackdown on Russian media. This followed a July 1 ruling by the Administrative Court of Berlin, which upheld the ban on the German-language broadcasting of Russia Today in Germany. The court dismissed RT DE Productions GmbH’s lawsuit against the German media regulator's decision, finding that the German entity held editorial responsibility and required a license.
