On March 11, Turkish financial group Garanti BBVA, 86% controlled by Spanish group Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA), stated it had made no decision regarding media reports about the possible sale of its Romanian subsidiary, Garanti BBVA Romania, to Raiffeisen Bank International AG. This statement followed multiple reports earlier the same day indicating Raiffeisen Bank International was nearing an agreement to acquire Garanti BBVA Romania. According to the Romanian newspaper Ziarul Financiar, Raiffeisen was set to purchase BBVA’s Romanian subsidiary, a report Expansión also cited. Bloomberg reported Raiffeisen proposed a purchase price of approximately €550 million ($640 million), or about 1.2 times the book value, for the unit, based on last year’s financial data. Previously, on March 10, sources close to the discussions cited by Bloomberg first reported that the Austrian banking group was close to an agreement to acquire Garanti BBVA Romania.
