National Library of Scotland, also known as NLS, is a privately owned entity headquartered in the UK. Founded in 1925, it operates with approximately 190 employees. It reported $61.7M in revenue as of 2023. Functioning as a provider of media and TV services and classified as a tier 2 media tech buyer, the company operates as Scotland's largest book repository, hosting over 26 million items, 7 million manuscripts, and 2 million maps.
The National Library of Scotland (NLS) announced on March 18, 2026, the final installment of its centenary programme, with Shetland Museum and Archives hosting an exhibition focused on poet Hugh MacDiarmid from March 28 through June 20. The "Outwith: Valda MacDiarmid and Whalsay" program will explore how the Shetland island of Whalsay influenced MacDiarmid (Christopher Murray Grieve) and his wife Valda Grieve during their time there. Previously, on March 13, NLS joined other national libraries in a UK-Ireland initiative to deepen cultural ties, following the announcement by Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer of €5 million in funding for 12 projects under the UK-Ireland Cultural Co-Operation Programme. This program fulfills a commitment from their 2025 UK-Ireland Summit to establish a strategic partnership. Earlier in March, NLS historic maps became easily integratable into iShare v6, enabling GIS teams to better understand place and assess change. On February 23, NLS, alongside the National Records of Scotland, published a prior information notice for the procurement of Archival Boxboard.
