Munich Airport is a publicly owned entity headquartered in Germany. Founded in 1949, it employs approximately 2,560 individuals. The company operates as an international airport serving Munich and the surrounding region of Upper Bavaria and Lower Bavaria. It is located 28.5 km (17.7 mi) northeast of Munich near the town of Freising and is named after former Bavarian minister-president Franz Josef Strauss. According to the German Aeronautical Information Publication, the airport's official English name is Muenchen Airport.
