Motion Picture Association is a privately owned entity headquartered in the US. Founded in 1922, it employs approximately 370 individuals. The association functions as an industry body representing film and television studios, with its main focus on movies, videos, and sound. Its membership includes major studios such as Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, Netflix Incorporated, Paramount Pictures Corporation, Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc., Universal City Studios LLC, and Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.
On March 20, 2026, Motion Picture Association (MPA) Chairman and CEO Charles Rivkin welcomed the Trump administration’s National Policy Framework for Artificial Intelligence, encouraging the nation’s ongoing leadership in creativity and innovation. Earlier on March 20, the MPA, which represents major Hollywood studios, announced its support for the Republican-led Protecting American Streaming and Innovation Act, a bill that could lead to new tariffs on Canadian exports as it seeks to dismantle Canada’s Online Streaming Act. Previously, on March 19, Netflix, an MPA member, supported the Republican bill aimed at Canada's attempts to compel foreign streaming companies like Netflix and Disney+ to contribute to Canadian funds for domestic content production. This followed the introduction of the Protecting American Streaming and Innovation Act by Rep. Lloyd Smucker (R-PA) earlier on March 19, which directs the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) to launch a Section 301 investigation into Canada’s Online Streaming Act. The Republican legislation threatens retaliatory measures, including additional tariffs and potential changes to the North American free trade agreement, due to the Canadian policy being deemed "discriminatory."
