Korea Media and Communications Commission, also known as KMCC or KCC, is a State Owned entity headquartered in South Korea. Founded in 2008, the organization functions as a South Korean media regulation agency, modeled after the Federal Communications Commission of the United States of America. It was established on February 29, 2008, combining the former Korean Broadcasting Commission and the Ministry of Information and Communication, with decisions made by the five members of the Commission. The organization was renamed Korea Media and Communications Commission in October 2025 under the Lee Jae-myung government, adding the media component to its mandate.
The Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA), in conjunction with the Korea Communications Commission (KCC), published a revised guide to the Information and Communications Network Act on March 4, 2026, aimed at supporting compliance and preventing illegal spam. Previously, on February 22, the head of Korea's media and telecommunications regulator met with Brazil's communications minister to discuss cooperation in next-generation technologies. Earlier in February, on the 3rd, the Lee Jae-myung administration abandoned its appeal regarding a court ruling that deemed the appointment of seven KBS directors during the Yoon Suk-yeol administration illegal, leading to their cancellation. The KCC also announced its "2026 Personal Location Information Business Registration Appropriateness Review Plan" on January 26, which introduces a hearing procedure for gathering opinions, provides explanation opportunities, and changes the registration examination schedule to four times a year. This followed discussions on the same day regarding the drafting of a new integrated regulatory framework, known as an 'Integrated Media Law,' for OTT and platform regulation, designed to move beyond existing boundaries.
