Duke University professor Adrian Bejan recently articulated his case for diversity through freedom, expressing views that may diverge from prevailing academic orthodoxy, on July 10, 2026. Previously, on July 8, Mark Hough, Duke’s first University Landscape Architect, retired after a 26-year tenure, during which he contributed 130 acres of new and restored landscapes and earned several accolades. Earlier that day, researchers, including coauthor Drew Shindell of the Nicholas School of the Environment, published findings indicating that airborne microplastics have a climate warming effect, expanding the family of aerosols known to cause warming. Simultaneously, a team led by marine conservation biologist Brian Silliman at the Nicholas School of the Environment described the emerging field of ‘Ecotech,’ which harnesses nature-based innovation to improve various industries, from agriculture to national defense. Additionally, the university highlighted the upcoming Rubin telescope, expected to image approximately 20 billion galaxies and 17 billion stars, generating tens of terabytes of data nightly for global researchers.
