DreamWorks Animation, privately owned and headquartered on a 13-acre campus in Glendale, California, functions as a subsidiary of Universal Pictures, a division of Comcast's NBCUniversal. Founded in 1994 by Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen as the animation department of DreamWorks SKG, and employing approximately 2000 individuals, the studio specializes in animation and post-production, focusing on the production of computer-generated animated feature films, television programming, and virtual shorts. The entity was spun off as an independent public corporation in 2004 before its acquisition by NBCUniversal in 2016 for approximately $3.8 billion. Over its history, the studio has generated more than $17 billion in global box office revenue and established several media franchises, including Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon, Trolls, and The Boss Baby.
Last week, Universal Kids Resort, Universal Destinations & Experiences' first regional theme park designed for young children aged 3-8, opened in Frisco, Texas. Laila Lockhart Kraner, who portrays "Gabby" in DreamWorks' "Gabby's Dollhouse," emceed the celebratory event. On July 8, Governor Gavin Newsom announced that the first year of California’s expanded Film and Television Tax Credit program is projected to deliver $6.6 billion in economic impact, with DreamWorks' "DONKEY" among 41 projects recently awarded credits. Earlier, on July 6, DreamWorks Animation also revealed it is developing "Forgotten Island," a new story about two lifelong best friends, adding to its portfolio of films known for exploring bonds like "How To Train Your Dragon" and "Shrek."
