The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) Semantic Forensics program contributes to the Pentagon’s deepfake detection efforts, supporting the Department of Defense's strategy in the disinformation fight, as noted on July 9. On the same day, DARPA was reported to be investigating whether nuclear waste can be converted into long-life power sources, potentially enabling drones, satellites, and other autonomous defense systems to operate continuously for up to 30 years without conventional recharging. Also on July 9, the agency announced that over 100 teams will participate in the DARPA Lift Challenge this August at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. This initiative aims to achieve unprecedented payload-to-weight ratios in vertical flight, supporting the Department of War’s Drone Dominance initiative. Earlier on July 9, DARPA hosted a Generative Optogenetics (GO) workshop, convening researchers and innovators from across the life sciences to address challenging questions in light-driven nucleic acid synthesis for synthetic biotechnology and biosecurity.
